We open our Christmas Weekend with Handel’s rousing and uplifting oratorio, a cornerstone of the festive season. So hotly anticipated at its first performance that to increase capacity women were asked to wear dresses ‘without hoops’ and men not to wear their swords, Messiah remains one of the most popular works ever written. Come and enjoy it in the company of the hand-picked musicians of the Suffolk Ensemble, Aldeburgh Voices and soloists from the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme.

You will be among a select group of people who will experience an exciting event in the attic of St Thomas’ Church in London Bridge: a Classical music concert in the oldest operating theatre in Europe.
DEBUT brings its critically acclaimed Classical music series to the Old Operating Theatre, this place once filled with screams, now takes on the guise of a concert hall.
After climbing the 18th century spiral staircase into the bell tower, you will be greeted at the shop and lead into the wonderful Herb Garret, and step back in time to explore the museum and its collection. When the time is right you will receive a short introduction to the history of the Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret and the grisly world of Victorian surgery (including a demonstration) before the advent of anaesthesia and antiseptics, after which you will be invited into the operating theatre where the concert will take place.
As a youthful and vibrant company DEBUT shares Classical music in fun and engaging ways, introducing world-class musicians who perform some of the most beautiful music ever written, with personality and finesse.
Expect fireworks from classically trained singers, drama from West End performers, and passionate playing from breath-taking musicians, you will not be disappointed — intimate, alternative and engaging!

Handel Four Coronation Anthems

Chandos Anthem No.9 O Praise ye the Lord
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness from Chandos Anthem No.4
Handel’s glorious anthems, commissioned for the coronation of King George ll and Queen Caroline in 1727, are bold and extrovert befitting the grandeur and importance of the occasion. They proved instantly popular and Zadok the Priest has been performed at every coronation since 1727. Suffolk Baroque Players play two of Handel’s most popular orchestral works including the Suite in G major, better known as The Water Music.
Kieran will perform as the baritone soloist.

Cosi Fan Tutte – The Remake
With a brand-new re-composition of the original score by Luca Tieppo and a compelling new drama and libretto by Becca Marriott and Iskandar Sharazuddin, Così Fan Tutte – The Remake (or Così Fan Tutti) will make audiences see the archetypes of Mozart’s opera in a new light. In a faithful attempt to combine the original material with modernity, this production will position itself at the heart of the current debate on gender politics.
Luca Tieppo, composer, says:
Modern adaptations of well-known operas usually intervene on the staging only (and sometimes on the libretto) but leave the original music score untouched. I’ve always thought this creates a sense of alienation between the dramatic performance and the musical landscape, which remains frozen in a specific time regardless of how the libretto is adapted. I would like to try a different way, that of the Remake – to create a fresh, coherent production where not only staging and libretto are intimately connected, but also the music is moulded by using different stylistic and vocal approaches that combine the source material with contemporaneity.
Selections from the Remake will be performed after a weeklong workshop in the first week of April.
Kieran will be playing the role of Will (Guglielmo).

Kieran will perform the lead baritone role (and villain!) of The Prince of Mantua in Offenbach’s Fantasio for Garsington’s Opera First event.
Fantasio is a melancholy, moon-struck dreamer who yearns after an unreachable princess. Can he win her over with his disguise as her beloved jester and fulfil his promise to prevent her arranged marriage to the prince? Secret encounters and mistaken identities are eventually, and sometimes unexpectedly, resolved.
Offenbach was known for his witty and catchy melodies, poking fun at the establishment in tuneful scores of dazzling charm. Celebrating the composer’s bicentenary in 2019, we present the UK stage premiere of this enchanting and gently poignant opera in a specially commissioned new English translation by Jeremy Sams.
We welcome Hanna Hipp (Capriccio, 2018) in the title role, Jennifer France (Le nozze di Figaro, 2017) as Princess Elsbeth and director Martin Duncan (Il turco in Italia, 2017) with conductor Justin Doyle making his Garsington debut.

Rossini’s Il Barbiere Di Siviglia is one of the greatest comic operas ever written. Composed in barely two weeks in 1816, it is a delightful romp packed with wonderful coloratura arias and ensembles, high speed “patter songs”, splendid buffo characters, and laugh-aloud scenes. Not to be missed!
This two act production will be directed by Simone Ibbett-Brown making her debut engagement with Devon Opera. Earlier this year she was Staff Director for Glyndebourne’s own production of this opera. Except for a few cuts this is a complete production, imaginatively set in Edwardian England, with a brilliant cast.
Estimated running time of the performance will be 3 hours with a 30 minute interval.
The performance will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

In his bicentenary year, the Sage of Coniston is being remembered worldwide for his roles as a social reformer, revered art critic, a gifted artist and champion of Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites, but his interest in music is little known. In this special ROSL event, we will shine a light on this, quoting extensively from Ruskin’s own writings and those of his contemporaries, and illustrating this with music, in the spirit of Michael Berkeley’s popular Radio 3 programme Private Passions. The programme will include a LDSM-commissioned work by William Marshall setting Ruskin’s poetry to music… and music by Ruskin himself, together with Bellini, Berkeley, Mozart, Oakeley, Ravenscroft, Beethoven, Gounod, Corelli and Mendelssohn.
