SUMMARY:Purcell: Purcell’s Lament\, Paragon Singers\, Bath
DESCRIPTION:Purcell’s Lament \nAn immersive staged concert exploring Purcell’s life and music \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s a cold November evening in 1695. Henry Purcell staggers home after an evening in the pub and finds himself locked out of his house. Too sozzled to think straight\, he lies down to sleep in the street and catches his death. \nAt his funeral his friends gather to lament the death of England’s greatest composer. \nSo begins Purcell’s Lament\, an original piece of concert-theatre celebrating the life and music of Henry Purcell. And what music! \nThe Cold Song\nDido’s Lament\nThe Fairy Queen\nHear My Prayer\nOne Charming Night\nFuneral Sentences for Queen Mary\nThey that Go Down to the Sea in Ships \nStep back in time and experience staged versions of his soaring anthems\, haunting arias\, tavern songs\, and beautiful courtly dances. \nCome and celebrate a life lived in music which still has the power to move and delight over 300 years after it was written\, and which continues to inspire composers across the world. Words and music combine in this immersive staged concert exploring Henry Purcell’s life. \nA new script by Stewart Harcourt weaves together Purcell’s most moving songs and choral works in a portrait of loss\, love and the joy of music that endures. \nFeaturing baroque instrumentalists\, soprano and baritone soloists Rhiannon Llewellyn and Kieran Rayner\, and brought to life a stage director Guido Martin Brandis\, associate director Malika Jumbe\, and Paragon’s acclaimed director Sarah Latto.

SUMMARY:Ned Keene (cover) – Peter Grimes\, Royal Ballet & Opera
DESCRIPTION:Performances: 5\, 8\, 12\, 15\, 21\, 24\, 28 May 2026. \nBritten’s brooding opera returns. Deborah Warner’s staging foregrounds the vulnerability and volatility of the shunned Peter Grimes\, and the tragic conflict between the individual and group. Kieran covers Jacques Imbrailo as Ned Keene\, the town apothecary and quack doctor. \nAllan Clayton\, Bryn Terfel and Maria Bengtsson star in Britten‘s bleak operatic parable\, in which the dark undercurrents of paranoia and mob mentality lead to a turbulent\, haunting end. Deborah Warner’s (Billy Budd\, Wozzeck) stunning contemporary staging – which had its premiere in 2022\, as part of The Royal Opera’s Britten Cycle – illuminates the humanity of the shunned Grimes\, while Britten’s evocative score pulses with dread and tension as the villagers close in on their troubled outcast. Music Director of The Royal Opera Jakub Hrůša conducts.

SUMMARY:Tarquinius: The Rape of Lucretia – English Touring Opera
DESCRIPTION:Kieran stars as the villain Tarquinius in English Touring Opera’s new production of the charged and cathartic opera\, The Rape of Lucretia. \nA group of bored soldiers decide to test the loyalty of the wives they have left behind at home\, unleashing a cruel and reckless series of events that have shattering consequences. \nBenjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia was written in the aftermath of the Second World War and reflects a world struggling to remake itself after enormous suffering and destruction. It remains a brutally relevant and chilling exploration of the abuse of power\, shot through with glimmers of hope for a better world\, with a beautiful\, sparse score for just thirteen players showing beauty and lyricism wrestling with the forces of darkness. \nETO Artistic Director & CEO Robin Norton-Hale directs and Music Director Gerry Cornelius conducts\, reuniting after their critically acclaimed production of Judith Weir’s Blond Eckbert in 2024. \n \n \nTickets: https://englishtouringopera.org.uk/productions/the-rape-of-lucretia.

SUMMARY:Gibaud: The Dowager’s Oyster
DESCRIPTION:The Dowager’s Oyster – An Operetta \nPresented by Cantata Dramatica\nMusic: Louis Mander\nLyrics: Jack Cherry & George Logan\nPerformance date: Thursday 8 th May\, 2025\nVenue: The Reform Club\, Pall Mall\, London\nProduction team\nMD – Louis Mander\nDirector – Peter Champness\nProducer/Designer – Louisa Petais \nThe Dowager’s Oyster is a comic operetta composed by Louis Mander with a\nlibretto by Jack Cherry. It premiered in 2016 at the Grimeborn Festival in\nLondon’s Arcola Theatre. The operetta is set in 1924\, blending murder mystery\nwith comedic farce\, often compared stylistically to Agatha Christie’s intrigue\nand the humor of Gilbert and Sullivan. The plot follows Lady Tindale (the\nDowager) and her daughter Cynthia as they travel to France for a holiday. The\ntrip is peppered with gossip\, misunderstandings\, and scandal involving\nCynthia’s fiancé\, Freddy\, who is secretly in Morocco with his lover. The story\ntakes a darker turn when the Dowager is murdered during a lunch\, leading to a\nwhodunnit investigation by Dr. Gibaud\, a pompous detective. The operetta\ncombines satire\, wit\, and social commentary\, making it a lighthearted yet\nsharp theatrical piece. Louis Mander’s composition received praise for its\nengaging musical style\, while the production was noted for its vibrant portrayal\nof 1920s settings and eccentric characters.
